Walking is probably the best way of exploring the Irish countryside, either independently or with a group. The speed of pace is perfect for taking in all that this beautiful country has to offer. You won't miss as thing!

There are thousands of walking routes all over Ireland; miles of trails, that will take you over green hills and sweeping valleys, with some amazing surrounding scenery. Every part of Ireland offers some kind of walking/trekking opportunities.

In Offaly, there's the Offaly Way, Grand Canal Way, and the Slieve Bloom Way.

In Kerry, there's the North Kerry Way, which is a 48-kilometer trek from Tralee to Blennerville. It travels north to west along the coast through Banna and Ballyheigue and around Kerry Head. It will take you around two days but it's definitely worth it. Then there the Kerry Way which is the longest marked trail in the Ireland - 215 kilometers around the Iveragh Peninsula!.

In Donegal, there's the Kilcar Way. Ideally suited for hill walkers and beginners, who want to enjoy more gentle walks on the country roads and hills but still take in breathtaking scenery.

Another classic walk in Donegal is the Glenties, located right in the heart of the highlands. The rugged coastline has some spectacular isolated beaches, with stunning views. Donegal has numerous walking and trekking tour operators suitable for all types, from beginner to advanced.

County Wicklow, also known as the “Garden of Ireland” has some first class routes. Every walking enthusiast knows the Wicklow Way. It was the first long distance walking route to be fully marked in Ireland. It’s starts off in suburbia and passes through a wide range of lush green rural landscapes in the nearby mountains. It’s extremely accessible. You can do part of it on your lunch hour! The full route is 132 kilometers beginning in Marlay Park, Dublin and finishing in Clonegal.

Wicklow has so many unique walking trails that they have even set up their own Walking Festivals. One is held in Spring and the other is on in Autumn - two of the best times to go walking in Ireland, when you’ll see the best colors.
