Leinster (Lagin) is located in the south east of Ireland, and covers an area of 19,632 sq km. It’s one of the most traditional provinces in the country and is home to the ancient kingdoms of Leinster and Meath.
Leinster contain the counties of: Dublin, Louth, Kildare, Offaly, Laois, Wicklow, Kilkenny, Meath, Westmeath, Longford, Carlow, and Wexford.
Leinster was the most powerful of all the Irish kingdoms and remained so, up until the 11th century. The first English invasion of Ireland took place in the 12th century. It was sparked off by a debate over the kingship of Leinster.
Later on, during the medieval period, the area around Dublin was the only place in Ireland effectively controlled the English. It was known as the “Pale”
Places well worth checking include the Hill of Allen in Co. Kildare - the site where Finn and the lengendary Fianna held their camp. It’s a massive hill that protrudes out from the surrounding bogland; you can’t miss it!. |
