Over five thousand old, The Céide Fields are the oldest known field systems in the world; they’re even older than the Pyramids They’re located around twenty miles from Ballina at Belderrig in north Co. Mayo. The fields were only discovered in the early 1980’s.

Since then, they have been part of an on-going archaeological investigation to discover more about this ancient megalithic civilization.

In 1993, they opened up a visitors centre, inviting people to view this historic and dramatic landscape. It has attracted over 20,000 people so far. If you come here, don’t forget to check out the magnificent Céide cliffs and spectacular Dún Briste sea stack.

The Céide Fields give us a unique insight into the everyday lives of a farming people and their organized society, their highly developed spiritual beliefs, and their struggle against an environment changing beyond their control.??
