Nowadays, Irish pubs can be found all over the world! But lets face it some of them aren’t very good. In some places, they won’t even speak English, and there’s no chance of hearing “an cupla focail Gaeilge” (the few words of Irish).
If you want to experience a “real” Irish pub and taste a “real” pint of Guinness, you’ll have to come to Dublin!
The city is completely packed with pubs. They’re inescapable. As noted by Leopold Bloom in James Joyce’s famous novel Ulysses “a good puzzle would be to cross Dublin without passing a pub”.
And who’d want to? Dublin pubs are not just places to get drunk (although this often happens!). They’re backdrops for music and storytelling; romance, friendship and family; gossip, laughter and in some cases absolute nonsense. Irish pubs are homes away from home, and to this day, are the life and soul of the city. |
